Glomerular Basement Membrane Function

Like all basement membranes the gbm consists mainly of laminin type iv collagen nidogen and heparan sulfate proteoglycan. If a substance has passed through the glomerular capillary endothelial cells glomerular basement membrane and podocytes then it enters the lumen of the tubule and is known as glomerular filtrate.

The glomerular basement membrane derives from a fusion of the basement membranes of the glomerular endothelial cells and the podocytes.



Glomerular basement membrane function. The glomerular basement membrane is a trilaminar membrane consisting of the lamina densa in the middle lamina interna next to the endothelial cells and lamina externa next to the podocytes. Why is the glomerular basement membrane negatively charged. The podocytes and endothelial cells secrete proteins to make up the basement membrane.



The glomerular basement membrane gbm is formed at the boundary of the basal laminas of the podocytes of the glomerulus and the endothelial cells of renal capillaries. It is an acellular extracellular matrix layer organized into three sublayers the lamina densa. It has an electron dense lamina densa when viewed under the electron microscope and it is formed by associations among the same general classes of macromolecules found in all other types of basement membranes.



The gbm can in some ways be viewed as a typical basement membrane. Epithelium of the bowmans capsule foot processes podocytes and slit pores. Otherwise it exits the glomerulus through the efferent arteriole and continues circulation as discussed below and as shown on the picture.



This function is impaired in alport syndrome a hereditary disorder that is caused by mutations in the gene encoding type iv collagen but it is not known how the mutations lead to a defective gbm. The human glomerular extracellular matrix contains some 144 different proteins. The glomerular basement membrane gbm of the kidney is the basal lamina layer of the glomerulusthe glomerular endothelial cells the gbm and the filtration slits between the podocytes perform the filtration function of the glomerulus separating the blood in the capillaries from the filtrate that forms in bowmans capsule.



The gbm is a fusion of the endothelial cell and podocyte basal laminas. Glomerular basement membrane gbm plays a crucial function in the ultrafiltration of blood plasma by the kidney. The find ings were interpreted as indicating that there are two successive glomerular filtration barriers in series.
